About this activity

A 3.5-hour 4WD journey through Madeira's dramatic interior, ascending from coastal views near Funchal to the island's third-highest peak. You'll explore the historical Curral das Freiras valley—a 15th-century mountain refuge for nuns—while navigating winding mountain roads inaccessible by standard vehicles.

At 355 meters above the sea level you will have the first stop, at Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, overlooking the beautiful and panoramic Funchal town. We drive towards the center of Madeira where you will find Curral das Freiras (Nun's Valley) surrounded by tremendous mountains. Curral das Freiras was previously used at the 15th century, as a refuge for the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara. Before we reach the top mountain Pico do Arreiro, the 3rd highest peak, we will pass at Miradouro do Paredão with a spendid view to Curral das Freiras, and this area was subjectes to intensive reforestation works.
