About this activity

Climb Africa's highest peak via the scenic Machame Route, a 7-day expedition that balances adventure with acclimatisation strategy. This trail rewards trekkers with dramatic landscapes—from Shira's golden sunsets to the imposing Barranco Wall—while porters handle gear and a camp cook manages meals, letting you focus on the ascent.

Trek Mount Kilimanjaro through Machame Route  the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro.

All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals.  Machame (also referred to as the "Whiskey route") better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker, however rewarding him with a scenic splendour such as not seen on the Marangu route. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, the Machame route offers the adventurous hiker a stunning scenic "slide show" over 6 days. The Machame route is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days.

There is an added benefit to this, as you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain - acclimatisation. The Machame route takes you high to Lava Tower (4630m) on the day 3 and brings you down by nearly 700m for an overnight at Barranco camp (3950m). This is the secret to successful acclimatization.

Highlights

  • Ascend to 5,895m on Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point
  • Experience the 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatisation method via Lava Tower (4,630m) descent
  • Cross the iconic Barranco Wall with panoramic views of Kibo
  • Trek through five distinct ecological zones from rainforest to alpine desert
  • Enjoy prepared meals and full porter support throughout

Insider tips

  • The Machame Route is less crowded than Marangu but more scenic—ideal if you want both views and relative solitude
  • Day 3's high-altitude push to Lava Tower followed by descent to Barranco is intentional acclimatisation; embrace the strategy rather than view it as backtracking
  • Start hydrating heavily from day one and eat even when not hungry—altitude suppresses appetite but your body needs fuel
  • Sunset at Shira plateau (day 2) is a highlight; position yourself early with a clear western view

Good to know

  • 7-day itinerary includes 6 days on the mountain plus arrival logistics from Arusha
  • All climbing equipment, camping gear, and food are porter-supported; bring personal items, medications, and warm/waterproof layers
  • Start point is Machame Gate; end point is Uhuru Peak summit with descent to Mweka Gate
  • Acclimatisation-focused route suits those with moderate fitness; not a technical climb but demands endurance and altitude tolerance
  • Group departures typically require 2+ participants; confirm current group size and start dates at booking

Best time to visit
