About this activity

Created with the objective of being one of the largest religious temples in the world, the Cathedral of Seville is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 and an Asset of Outstanding Universal Value in 2010. The Cathedral or Saint Mary of the Holy See has all the strength of its builders and all its symbology that will amaze you.

The building was carried out after the demolition of the old Aljama Mosque in Seville. The minaret, the current Giralda and its famous Patio de los Naranjos are preserved from the original construction. Located next to the Archivo de Indias, the Reales Alcázares and the famous Barrio de Santa Cruz.

For more than 150 years Christians used the Muslim temple as a center of worship and it was in 1401 when the cathedral council decided to build a new temple. The works lasted until the fifteenth century, until 1506. According to tradition, the canons wanted to make such a large church “that those who saw it finished would have us crazy.”

During the Renaissance stage, different dependencies attached to the Gothic temple were rebuilt, such as the Sacristy, the Chapter House or the Royal Chapel. The last part of the Giralda was also built, with the help of Hernán Ruíz, which, with a height of 104 meters, is visible from all points of the city and is currently an emblematic monument of Seville in which the body of bells.
