About this activity

A 9-hour mountain expedition from Bariloche into the Andes foothills, combining scenic lakeside drives, riverside walks through native forest, and access to Cerro Tronador's striking Black Blizzard glacier—a unique dark-ice formation few visitors experience. This route balances contemplative nature immersion with tangible alpine adventure.

Along the way you will find viewpoints to enjoy the stunning views offered by the hills, you can approach one of the dark sandy beaches of Lake Mascardi. Past Villa Mascardi you turn right and you can walk a path surrounded by native forests. It is an area of exceptional beauty, visited every year by mountain and fishing lovers.
When you arrive at the Manso River, you can stop at the Los Rápidos Bridge to watch the trout swimming hurriedly in the crystal clear water.
From there you can see the valley of the upper Manso River in almost all its extension, with its meandering course and greenish waters. Following to Pampa Linda, you will find a beautiful place where accommodation and gastronomy services are located. From there you can see other glaciers of the Tronador.
The ascent continues until you reach the last viewpoint of the tour, the Black Blizzard, a glacier that descends from the Tronador and is noted for its dark color.

Insider tips

  • Bring binoculars to spot trout and potential wildlife in the river and forest sections.
  • The forest walk is best done early in the tour when energy is highest; pace yourself as the route involves gradual elevation gain.
  • Stop at Pampa Linda for lunch or coffee—it's the last service point and a natural turning point in the itinerary.
  • Arrive early at viewpoints near the glacier; afternoon clouds can obscure the Blizzard's dark ice dramatically.

Good to know

  • Total duration is 9 hours including travel, walks, and stops; bring water and snacks beyond what Pampa Linda offers.
  • Wear layers—mountain weather is variable; waterproof jacket recommended.
  • Comfortable hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes required for forest paths and uneven terrain.
  • Route is accessible by minivan, though the final approach to Black Blizzard viewpoint involves walking on prepared but exposed terrain.
