About this activity

Experience two of Patagonia's most dramatic glaciers—Upsala and Spegazzini—on a full-day boat and forest expedition across Lake Argentino's northern arm. Navigate through towering icebergs in the Icebergs Channel, then hike through pristine Andean forest to the Spegazzini Refuge for unparalleled glacier views.

It is one of the most important navigations in the El Calafate area when visiting the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, combining it with a descent into the forest from where you can hike and enjoy a view like never before of the Spegazzini Glacier and Glacier Bay.
The northern arm of Lake Argentino is visited by crossing the Icebergs Channel, located 14 km from the Upsala Glacier (one of the largest), also sailing in front of the Spegazzini Glacier (the highest). The navigation takes place between spectacular icebergs of enormous size and varied shapes. A disembarkation is made at the Spegazzini Base where you will start a walk through the forest until you arrive at the Restaurant "Refugio Spegazzini" where you can have lunch or take a short walk through the Andean Patagonian forest.

Highlights

  • Cruise past Upsala Glacier, one of the largest in the region
  • Navigate the Icebergs Channel amid colossal, sculpted ice formations
  • View Spegazzini, the highest glacier in the area, from multiple vantage points
  • Forest walk through native Andean Patagonian woodland
  • Lunch at Refugio Spegazzini with panoramic glacier backdrop
  • 10-hour immersive adventure combining water and land exploration

Insider tips

  • Book early morning departures to catch the best light on the glaciers and avoid afternoon winds that can obscure views
  • The forest walk is moderate; wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as trails can be muddy even in dry weather
  • Bring a telephoto lens or binoculars to spot wildlife (guanacos, Andean condors) in the forest canopy
  • The Refugio lunch is included or available à la carte—pre-order vegetarian/dietary meals in advance via your operator

Good to know

  • Full 10-hour duration includes boat time, navigation, forest walk, and meal stop; plan accordingly with hotel logistics
  • Dress in layers: weather on the water is cold and wind-prone, even in summer months
  • Moderate fitness level required for the forest walk; uneven terrain and elevation changes
  • Life jackets provided; the boat is stable but suitable for ages 5+ with reasonable mobility
  • Morning departure typical; confirm pick-up location and time with operator 24 hours prior
