Things to Do in Brașov

Brașov is Romania's second-largest city by population and sits in a natural valley surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, making it one of Eastern Europe's most dramatically positioned urban centres.

The city's iconic Black Church (Biserica Neagră) is the largest church between Istanbul and Vienna, darkened by a 1689 fire and now a masterpiece of Gothic architecture visible from across the city.

Brașov was historically a major Saxon settlement and trade hub on the Silk Road, with medieval fortifications and guild-house architecture still dominating the Old Town.

Mount Tâmpa overlooks the city at 960 metres and can be reached by cable car or hiking trail, offering panoramic views and a Hollywood-style sign reading "BRAȘOV" visible from the valley.

The city hosted winter sports events during the 2013 World University Winter Games and remains a gateway to world-class ski resorts like Poiana Brașov, just 12 km away.

Brașov's Piața Sfatului (Council Square) is one of Romania's largest medieval squares, surrounded by pastel-coloured merchant houses and the striking Town Hall with its distinctive red roof.
