Things to Do in Avignon

Avignon was the seat of the Papacy for 68 years (1309–1377), making it one of Catholicism's most important historical cities and home to the stunning Palais des Papes.

The famous 12th-century Pont d'Avignon (Bridge of Saint-Bénézet) originally had 22 arches and stretched across the entire Rhône River before most of it was destroyed by floods.

Avignon's medieval city walls, built in the 14th century, still completely encircle the old town and are among the best-preserved in France at nearly 4.3 kilometres long.

The city hosts the world-renowned Avignon Festival (Festival d'Avignon) every July, attracting over 100,000 theatre lovers and featuring hundreds of productions across the historic streets.

Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse department and sits on the left bank of the Rhône, positioned as a gateway to Provence's lavender fields, Mont Ventoux, and wine regions.

The Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic palace in the world and remains largely intact, with 25 towers and rooms decorated with 14th-century frescoes.
