Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of Niagara Falls, plunging 108 metres into the Zambezi River gorge.
The falls are known locally as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The Smoke That Thunders) in the Tonga language, named for the massive spray visible from kilometres away.
David Livingstone was the first European to see the falls in 1855, and named them after Queen Victoria.
The Zambezi River forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and you can visit the falls from both countries.
October to December is peak season for adventure activities like bungee jumping and whitewater rafting in the gorge below.
The Falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to rare bird species like the African Fish Eagle and Rock Pratincole.
