Agafay is a high-altitude desert plateau (around 1,160 metres) located just 45km south of Marrakech, making it one of Morocco's most accessible desert experiences.
The landscape features dramatic rocky terrain and sparse vegetation rather than sand dunes, offering a stark contrast to the Sahara and making it ideal for day trips from Marrakech.
Agafay's name derives from Amazigh (Berber) origins, and the region has been inhabited by Berber communities for centuries who traditionally herded goats across these plateaus.
The area has become increasingly popular for glamping and desert camps in the past 15 years, transforming it into a modern adventure hub while maintaining its traditional character.
Agafay receives significantly less rainfall than Marrakech due to its elevation and rain-shadow effect from the Atlas Mountains, creating its distinctive arid, rocky environment.
The plateau offers some of Morocco's best sunset views over the Atlas Mountains, with visibility extending towards the High Atlas peaks on clear days.
