Did you know? Maasai Mara
The Maasai Mara's annual wildebeest migration sees over 1.5 million animals cross the Mara River each July–November in one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles.
The reserve is named after the Maasai people who have inhabited and grazed cattle in this region for centuries, and 'Mara' means 'spotted' in their language, referring to the landscape's appearance.
Maasai Mara sits at an elevation of 1,500–2,170 metres and straddles the Kenya–Tanzania border, with the Serengeti National Park directly south in Tanzania.
The Mara's ecosystem supports the highest concentration of large predators in Africa, including over 450 lions, making it a premier destination for big cat photography.
Despite covering only 1,510 square kilometres, the reserve accounts for roughly 20% of Kenya's tourism revenue and attracts over 100,000 visitors annually.
