About this activity

Experience Madeira's dramatic northwest landscape on an 8-hour 4WD adventure reaching elevations above 1,500 meters, with volcanic pools, native forests, and traditional levada water channels. This comprehensive tour combines rugged terrain exploration with cultural immersion and coastal swimming, ideal for active travellers seeking authentic island experiences.

Embark on this shore excursion and visit the best places at the NorthWest oF Madeira in a 4x4 vehicle with a open top roof. We will take you to the Western part of Madeira passing thru deep valleys, taking you up to 1500 meters high. You will get information and history about the views, native forest, fauna flora, meet the madeiran water aqueducts "levadas" and learn more about them.

Please bring some comfortable shoes as we may have a 15 minutes walk to learn more about the "levadas". We will pass the Madeira plateau, the only flat area in this island, and then drive to Porto Moniz where you will visit the vulcanic lava pools. If the weather slows, you can swim at the volcanic polls. The lunch is optional, and has a cost of €12.00 per person for a 3 meal course with beverage and coffee. On the way back, you will have stunning views cliff's and waterfalls, and we will have a stop where you can try our famous "nectar" poncha, one of our local drinks.

Highlights

  • ✓Open-top 4WD drive through remote valleys and the Madeira plateau
  • ✓Walk alongside historic levada water aqueducts with local commentary
  • ✓Swim in natural volcanic lava pools at Porto Moniz (weather permitting)
  • ✓Panoramic cliff and waterfall views on the return journey
  • ✓Taste traditional poncha (local spirit-based drink) at a scenic stop
  • ✓Learn about native flora, fauna, and island geology throughout

Insider tips

  • ★Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes—the levada walk is about 15 minutes but terrain can be uneven
  • ★Bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to use the volcanic pools; water temperature varies seasonally
  • ★The open-roof vehicle offers superior photo opportunities; arrive early or request window seating for best sightlines
  • ★Opt for the optional lunch (€12) if you want to refuel mid-tour; otherwise pack snacks

Good to know

  • •Duration is 8 hours total; plan for early morning pickup from your cruise ship or accommodation
  • •Comfortable, closed-toe hiking shoes are essential due to levada terrain and uneven ground
  • •Lunch is not included in the base price but available for €12 per person (3-course meal with beverage and coffee)
  • •Swimming at volcanic pools depends on weather conditions; bring swimwear just in case
  • •The vehicle has an open top; bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and a light layer for elevation
