About this activity

A 7-hour guided loop hike through Vitosha National Park, summiting Cherni Vrah (2290m)—Bulgaria's second-highest peak accessible from Sofia. This route combines high-altitude alpine scenery with panoramic views across three mountain ranges and passes through a protected peat bog reserve.

Our hiking trek takes you on a loop trail, starting from Aleko Hut and going as high as Cherni Vrah summit (2290m), then descending along a different path back to Aleko Hut. Starting from appr. 1750m. above sea level we first traverse the foot of Golyam Rezen Peak and Malak Rezen Peak. This stage is particularly scenic with constant views towards the capital Sofia, the Balkan Mountains, and the highest summits of the Rila Mountains far in the distance. Eventually, we arrive at Cherni Vrah Peak (2290m), where we will have a well-deserved rest. When descending down we will pass through the Torfeno Branishte (The Peat) Reserve, eventually arriving back to Aleko Hut.

• Explore on foot one of the most beautiful Bulgarian Nature Parks
• Climb Cherni Vruh peak (2290 m asl)
• Admire beautiful natural alpine landscapes and rock formations
• Photograph and adore rare and beautiful plants
• Spot wild birds and mammals in their natural habitat

Highlights

  • Summit Cherni Vrah peak at 2290m with 360° views of Sofia, the Balkans, and Rila Mountains
  • Loop trail from Aleko Hut (1750m) via two distinct ascent and descent routes
  • Traverse Torfeno Branishte Peat Reserve with rare alpine flora and wildlife
  • Views across Golyam and Malak Rezen peaks with constant vistas toward the capital

Insider tips

  • Start early to maximize summit time and enjoy clearer visibility toward Rila Mountains in good light
  • The descent via the peat reserve is less steep than the ascent route—use it to recover energy and spot ground-nesting birds
  • Bring layers; weather at 2290m changes rapidly, and exposed ridge sections offer no shelter

Good to know

  • Total elevation gain ~540m; moderate fitness required due to altitude and duration
  • Start point is Aleko Hut, accessible by cable car or vehicle from central Sofia (~15km)
  • Trail is marked but rocky in places; sturdy hiking boots essential
  • Water and basic supplies available at Aleko Hut; carry 2L minimum for the loop
  • Hiking on well-established paths; no technical climbing needed
