Thracian Tombs Tour in the Valley of the Thracian Kings
About this activity
Explore six remarkably preserved Thracian royal tombs buried beneath earthen mounds in Bulgaria's Valley of the Thracian Kings near Kazanluk. This 2.5-hour guided tour reveals the monumental architecture, burial customs, and beliefs of one of Europe's most fascinating ancient civilizations, with most sites still largely intact thanks to their subterranean construction.
The Thracian tombs and sanctuaries are the only almost entirely preserved representatives of the monumental cult architecture of the ancient Thracians. The main merit of their preservation to this day is that almost all of them are buried in tombstones. There are over 60,000 Thracian mounds on the territory of Bulgaria, of which only about 1000 are surveyed.
