Walking tours cover on average 3-5 km and are the best way to discover hidden gems.

About this activity

Leeuwarden keeps its centre compact, which makes it good ground for a self-guided tour built around puzzles. You gather on the Waagplein in front of the Stadswaag, and the route heads out towards the Oldehove Tower and the Grote of Jacobijnerkerk before circling back through the streets around the Fries Museum. Each stop pairs a task with something worth knowing about the spot itself.

Up to four players form one team and share a single phone, which suits families, friends and colleagues alike, and a single player can take on the whole route. Bigger groups divide into teams and start together from the same square. Nothing is guided and no departure time is set, so you can look around the Waagplein first and begin when your team is ready.

How to play

Only a few steps separate you from your first task in Leeuwarden.

  1. Book the Exploration Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

The route mixes riddles, observation questions and photo tasks that ask your team to notice how a facade, a gate or a bridge is put together. Further along you reach the Blokhuispoort, one of the more imposing buildings on the route, and the questions there open up the wider story of the city. Correct answers bring in points and clues that matter for the closing puzzle.

Two teams or more turn the walk into a competition, and the leaderboard records who worked the fastest and answered best. Teams from offices use it in the same way as a team building outing. You are free to pause, sit down somewhere and continue afterwards, finishing your circuit of Leeuwarden at your own speed.
