Walking tours cover on average 3-5 km and are the best way to discover hidden gems.

About this activity

Secrets of Hoek van Holland is a self-guided walking tour that turns the coastal village into a playing field of puzzles. You start on the Prins Hendrikstraat and walk past De Dorpskerk, the Torpedoloods and the harbour basin of De Berghaven. At each stop there is something to work out, and afterwards the game tells you what the place is.

It works for couples, friends, families and colleagues who would rather look around than sit still. A team of up to four plays on one phone, so a bigger group splits into several teams. Going alone is fine too, and since nothing starts at a fixed moment you can pick the hour when the light over the water suits you.

How to play

Starting in Hoek van Holland takes four steps.

  1. Book the Exploration Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

Between the stops you solve riddles, answer questions and complete photo tasks that make you look closely at things you would otherwise walk past. The route reaches the Hoge Vuurtoren and the defence works of Fort 1881, and explains what such structures were built for. You also learn how the village relates to its harbour and its lifeboat station.

When several teams play at once the walk becomes a contest: answers score points and a leaderboard shows who leads, which is why the game is also used for team outings. Nothing is timed, so you can break off for coffee and continue afterwards. It is a relaxed way to spend an afternoon in Hoek van Holland.
