About this activity

A GPS-powered self-guided exploration game that transforms Groningen into an interactive puzzle hunt, combining sightseeing with riddles, photo challenges, and hidden history. Perfect for discovering lesser-known stories about the city while solving puzzles on your smartphone—no guide required.

Groningen is a student city with a compact old core, and this outdoor scavenger hunt makes you read it street by street. You start on the Grote Markt below the Martini Tower, and the route carries on towards Forum Groningen and the A-kerk on the other side of the centre. Each stop sets a task and follows it with something to know about the spot.

A team is up to four people sharing one phone, which works for families, groups of friends and colleagues, and one person can just as easily do the whole route. Larger groups split into teams that start together on the square. No guide walks with you and no start time is fixed, so you can wander the market stalls first and begin when it suits you.

How to play

Your first task in Groningen is only a few steps away.

  1. Book the Exploration Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

The route is built from riddles, observation questions and photo tasks that ask your team to look at a gable, a bridge or a courtyard rather than walk past it. Later you reach the Vismarkt and the greenery of the Prinsentuin, and the questions there turn to how the city grew and what its canals were for. Correct answers earn points and clues that lead into the closing puzzle.

Send out two or more teams and the leaderboard settles the ranking, which is why the game doubles as a team building activity. You can pause on a terrace and continue whenever you want, wrapping up your walk through Groningen on your own schedule.
