Delft packs canals, courtyards and a market square into a centre you can cross on foot in minutes, which is why it works so well as a self-guided walking tour with puzzles. You start on the Markt between the Stadhuis and the Nieuwe Kerk Bell Tower, and the route leads on towards Museum Prinsenhof Delft. Each stop sets your team a task and then explains what you are looking at.

A team is one to four players sharing a single phone, so families, friends and colleagues can all join in, and going round on your own is just as workable. Larger groups form extra teams and follow the same route. No guide accompanies you and no start time is fixed, so you can browse the market stalls first and open the first task when you feel like it.

Along the canals you work through riddles, questions about details on the buildings and photo tasks that put your team in front of what you have found. The route also takes in the Hofje van Gratie and the windmill De Roos at the edge of the old centre, and the questions there bring out how the town was laid out and lived in. Correct answers score points and hand you clues for the puzzle at the end.

Play with more than one team and the leaderboard decides the winner, which makes the game a straightforward team building option for a company outing. Since nothing runs on a timer you can stop for coffee beside the water and continue afterwards, closing your loop through Delft whenever you choose.
