About this activity

Explore the Roluos Group, the earliest monumental temples of the Khmer Empire (9th–10th centuries), before they moved the capital to Angkor. This 8-hour tour combines three atmospheric temple ruins with authentic village life and ends at Bakheng Mountain for golden-hour views over Angkor Wat.

We visit three temples at what is today called Roluos. The site used to be the capital city of the Khmer Empire before it was moved briefly to Koh Ker and then permanently to Angkor Thom. Lolei is the northernmost temples situated inside the Roluos Group which were built in the late 9th century. All of the temples, Lolei, Preah Ko, and Bakong were Buddhist temples. In Preah Ko, you can see the 3 towers with stone lions and intricate carvings. After lunch, we'll visit a local village and market. You can see how the locals go about their everyday business and stop to look around a market where you can buy cheap gifts for your loved ones.  We'll then head over to Bakheng Mountain which was established in the early 10th century to see the wonderful view over Angkor Wat.

Highlights

  • Tour Preah Ko's three iconic towers with carved stone lions and ornate reliefs

Insider tips

  • Roluos temples are less crowded than Angkor Wat; visit early morning before the afternoon tour crowd
  • Wear sturdy shoes for uneven temple steps and loose ground; the site has minimal restoration
  • Bring a sarong or light cover for temple visits; shoulders and knees should be covered as a sign of respect
  • The village market is genuine and not tourist-oriented—cash in small denominations works best for souvenirs

Good to know

  • Includes lunch break (typically at a local restaurant; dietary preferences should be noted in advance)
  • Walking involved across temple grounds and village areas; moderate fitness helpful
  • Meeting point and hotel pickup/drop-off details confirmed at booking
  • Sunset timing varies by season; tour may start earlier in wet season (May–October)
