You will leave the hotel early in the morning to drive south to the Nabatean Red Rose City of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for a classic visit. As you travel, gaze at the desert landscapes and hear tales of Jordan’s history. Hewn into a sandstone valley carved by the Nabataean people more than 2,000 years ago, this ancient rose-red rock city located 245 kilometers from Amman at the crossroads of age-old trading routes, to dominate ancient Arabia. Reach Petra’s main site to learn more about its magnificent history.
On arrival, leave your vehicle, and enjoy a 2-hour tour of this UNESCO Heritage listed wonder with a local guide. First, walk through the famous “Siq”, a narrow path of 1.2 kilometers; rock fissure that was once the main entrance to the city, and marvel at your first glimpse of the hauntingly beautiful Treasury “El - Khazneh” as the canyon suddenly opens up. Admire this rose-pink masterpiece, originally built to house priceless treasures and capture it on camera.
Then, walk through the widening canyon to witness other monuments such as the 3,000-seater Theater, the Royal Tombs, and the Byzantine Church. As you explore, listen as your guide describes how the Nabateans sculpted the buildings, and learn how they mastered the harsh desert conditions to make their lives here.
After around two hours of exploring, enjoy free time, and lunch on your own expense. If time permits you can climb up the Monastery on your own or the High Place of Sacrifice: a clifftop altar that was once used for animal sacrifices and other ceremonies. Return to Petra’s entrance and rejoin your private vehicle and driver.
Return to the capital of Amman, for a panoramic tour of the city’s highlights. Drive around the city and downtown area past the animated markets, churches, and mosques like King Abdullah’s Mosque. Start by discovering the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic-era ruins of Amman Citadel for a viewpoint. Gaze in awe at the Roman Amphitheater, carved into a hillside in the 2nd century B.C. and the most important remnant of Amman’s predecessor, the Roman white city of Philadelphia.
Free time at leisure in Amman downtown area for souvenir shopping in the local gold and spice markets. Pass by King Hussein’s Palace, where the late, revered king is laid to rest. Your tour then concludes by strolling along “Jabal Al-Webdeih” and “Jabal Amman” Quarters, the Rainbow Street, Amman’s colorful arts and shopping hotspot. Delve into the upscale neighborhoods of “Abdoun” and “Swefieh”, where luxury shopping malls and swanky private villas line the streets.
After passing through modern Amman drive back to your hotel.
