About this activity

Explore Iceland's raw Highland wilderness on a private 8-hour luxury jeep tour from Reykjavik, featuring three striking waterfalls and the otherworldly rainbow-hued mountains of Landmannalaugar. Travel in comfort via 4x4 across challenging F-Roads and river crossings, with a dedicated driver and personalized pace.

This private luxury jeep tour to Landmannalaugar will transport you to the breathtaking Icelandic Highlands, where you will be awestruck by the sight of vibrant mountains and sizzling rivers.

The journey to Landmannalaugar is an adventure in and of itself, as we drive on gravel, bumpy F-Roads, and cross rivers in our luxury 4x4 jeep, ensuring fun and amazing memories in all comfort.

Our Private Luxury Landmannalaugar Jeep Tour starts with a pick-up from your accommodation in Reykjavik before we head towards the spectacular Icelandic Highlands. On the way, we visit the beautiful Háifoss waterfall, the High Waterfall. This spectacular waterfall cascades 122 meters down a two-million-year-old cliff into a tiny canyon and is a spectacular sight to see.

As we continue our private luxury tour, you will also have the chance to visit the unique Hjálparfoss, made of two smaller waterfalls merging into one before flowing into the river below.

Another amazing waterfall we will visit is the spectacular Lekafossar, located in a canyon in the Sigöldugljufur valley, the "valley of tears", one of Iceland's hidden gems on the way to Landmannalaugar.

We continue our private luxury journey towards the highlands, to Landmannalaugar. Through the windows of our comfy luxury 4x4 Jeep, you will be able to view the ever-changing scenery and the spectacular colors of the mountains in Landmannalaugar, which almost look unreal.

Once at Landmannalaugar, we find a campground with a little cafe serving drinks, coffee, and snacks. There are several easy hikes from the campsite that take you across the mountains with their vibrant colors and the neighboring lava field. The area's primary feature is a natural hot spring where you may, if you wish, have a peaceful bath, so bring your swimsuit and towel.

On our journey back, we take a somewhat different route, crossing a few rivers and passing near Hekla, Iceland's most famous active volcano, before driving you back to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Insider tips

  • Midday light (10am–2pm) shows off Landmannalaugar's colours most vividly; aim for clear-sky days in summer for true mountain hues
  • Bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots even if you don't plan to walk far—terrain is uneven and wet around waterfalls and geothermal areas
  • The route is fully dependent on weather and road conditions; confirm final itinerary with your driver the morning of the tour
  • Pack layers and windproof outerwear—Highlands weather is unpredictable and temperature drops significantly with elevation

Good to know

  • Pickup and drop-off from your Reykjavik accommodation included
  • F-Roads (mountain routes) are gravel and require high-clearance 4x4; not passable in winter or poor conditions
  • Tour duration is 8 hours total; time at Landmannalaugar depends on weather and group preference
  • Private tour means flexible pacing—request stops for photography or shorter/longer hikes as desired
  • Not wheelchair accessible due to rough terrain, river fords, and high-clearance vehicle requirements

Who it's for

Adventure seekers comfortable with rough off-road driving and backcountry terrainPhotography enthusiasts targeting Iceland's most colourful landscapesSmall groups or families wanting flexible, private transport without coach-tour schedulesTravellers seeking a premium, customizable Highland experience

Best time to visit

Late June through August offers reliable road access, longer daylight, and the most vibrant mountain colours. September is possible but roads begin closing mid-month; avoid winter (October–April) when F-Roads are impassable. Tours run best on clear, calm days; strong winds or heavy rain can limit visibility and time at Landmannalaugar.
