About this activity

Explore the dramatic sea caves and golden cliffs of Portugal's Algarve coast on a private 90-minute boat tour departing from Portimão, with a strong chance of spotting dolphins along the way. This intimate experience combines geology, history, and wildlife in one of southern Europe's most scenic coastal regions.

We will start this magnificent journey in Portimão. Our team will be waiting for you at the pier of Clube Naval de Portimão or picking you up in our comfortable and air-conditioned minibuses to take you to where you board the boat.

After a warm welcome, our staff will explain some security procedures. Then, we will start our journey towards the famous Benagil Cave.

Along the way, we will see churches, castles, beautiful caves, scary caves and hear old stories. Hopefully we get to see our great friends, the “dolphins” – All our vessels are equipped with VHF Radio and will be operating in the same channel as the dolphin watching boats so if they are spotted, which is very frequent in our coast, and they are within 2 nautical miles we will take you to see them.

It will be a fantastic, funny and interesting trip, which is much more than a boat trip.

Highlights

  • Navigate into the iconic Benagil Cave, a natural cathedral carved into limestone cliffs
  • Discover hidden sea caves and rock formations inaccessible by land
  • Hear local legends and historical stories about the coast from your guide
  • High probability of dolphin sightings via real-time radio coordination with other vessels
  • Private tour option ensures personalised attention and flexible pacing

Insider tips

  • Morning departures (8–10am) typically offer calmer seas and better photo conditions due to sun angle on the cliffs
  • Bring a waterproof camera or phone case—sea spray is common, especially near cave entrances
  • Ask your guide about the churches and castle ruins visible from the water; many date back centuries and have strategic coastal significance

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup available via air-conditioned minibus; confirm collection point when booking
  • Wear layers and non-slip footwear; deck conditions can be wet
  • Dolphin sightings depend on seasonal migration and daily sightings reports; not guaranteed but frequent
  • Tour operates year-round; advance booking recommended, especially in peak summer months
