About this activity

Immerse yourself in Bulgaria's rose-picking heritage by harvesting the legendary Kazanlak Rose alongside local pickers in traditional dress, then master the centuries-old craft of rose oil extraction in an authentic farmhouse. This hands-on workshop reveals why the Rose Valley produces 70% of the world's rose oil and offers rare insight into a UNESCO-recognised tradition still thriving in rural Bulgaria.

One of the most authentic, old and most respected customs and crafts in Bulgaria - picking roses and producing rose oil! In this tour, you can not only personally get to know the flower of the gods - the oil-bearing Kazanlak Rose, which is grown only in these latitudes, but also take part in the ancient ritual on picking roses with the local rose-pickers dressed in folk traditional costumes during the rose picking season, with the tasting rose sweet, gulovitsa and rose liqueur. And then you will visit an old house where you will learn to brew the rose oil and extract the rose water. You will see local mode of life and centuries-old Bulgarian customs and traditions, which local residents will share with you. A visit to the Bulgarian Rose factory will take you to a demonstration of rose soap making.

The operator reserves the right to make amendments in the programme/itinerary because of the different time of rose maturing in the region. The activity happens in 2 destinations - Karlovo and Damascena near Kazanlak as the order is reconfirmed with the customers.

Insider tips

  • The rose harvest window is brief (May–June); book well ahead if visiting during peak season for guaranteed field access
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty — picking involves outdoor farmwork
  • Ask locals about the difference between Kazanlak and Damascena roses; the distinction defines regional pride
  • The itinerary may shift based on flowering timing, so stay flexible and ask your guide about seasonal variations

Good to know

  • Duration: 2 hours (core activity time; transport between Karlovo and Damascena adds travel time not specified in listing)
  • The workshop spans two locations — Karlovo town and Damascena village near Kazanlak — requiring transfers
  • Expect some physical activity during the picking phase; the distillation portion is less strenuous
  • Rose oil extraction uses traditional steam-distillation methods; the process involves heat and steam
  • Small group setting allows personal interaction with guides and artisans
