Tulum, Mexico

About this activity

Explore Muyil, a lesser-known Maya archaeological site deep within jungle, then drift by boat through two lagoons connected by a pre-Hispanic canal system toward the Caribbean. This combination tour reveals layers of Maya history and pristine wetland ecosystems in one immersive experience.

Discover the fascinating history of the Maya at Muyil, a spectacular ancient city in the middle of the jungle. The ruins of Muyil are a hidden gem, our expert guides will lead you through this wonderful site with tales of calendars, ceremony and Spanish invaders.

Once we reach the Muyil lagoon, we take a boat across two lagoons connected by an artificial canal that has been in use for many centuries. Xlapak is the name of the building at the beginning of the lazy river and the start of an incredible floating experience in crystal clear pluvial water on its way to the Caribbean Sea. We float for over 30 minutes surrounded by mangroves, orchids, bromeliads and cacti while we hear the sounds of nature.

A delicious Mexican food tasting is included at the end the tour.

Highlights

  • Walk through Muyil's temple complexes and pyramids with expert commentary on Maya calendars and Spanish conquest
  • Float 30+ minutes through mangrove-lined lagoons in crystal-clear freshwater
  • Traverse an ancient artificial canal built centuries ago, still in use today
  • Spot orchids, bromeliads, and native wildlife in the Sian Ka'an biosphere
  • Sample traditional Mexican cuisine at tour conclusion

Insider tips

  • Arrive early in the season (November–April) to beat humidity and have clearer water visibility for the float
  • Wear water shoes or sandals for the boat sections; the lagoon floor is safe but slippery
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a lightweight long-sleeve layer—sun exposure is intense on open water, and insects are fewer when covered

Good to know

  • 6-hour total duration includes guide-led walking at ruins, boat transfers, and meal time
  • Bring swimwear if you plan to wade in the lagoon; not mandatory but enhances the experience
  • Departs from Tulum; confirm exact pickup location and time when booking
  • Terrain includes jungle paths and boat platforms; moderate fitness helpful but not essential
