About this activity

Tackle Morocco's remote High Atlas on a challenging 6-day trek to Mgoun (4068 m), the country's third-highest peak. Navigate dramatic mountain passes, traditional Berber villages, and the spectacular Tassaout Canyon while experiencing some of North Africa's most isolated and untouched alpine terrain.

North of the Central High Atlas, where it is most impenetrable, where no road manages to cross it, stands a multitude of peaks whose altitude is around 4000 m: thus the M'Goun (4068 m) and Ouaougoulzat (3770 m)
At their feet, the Berber valleys Ait Bougmez, Ait Bowli and Imerhane isolated for a large part of the year by snow and difficult access are oases of prosperity in the middle of the austere mountains which protect them to infinity. Their inhabitants, proud craftsmen of an astonishing human landscape, built the most beautiful villages of the Atlas. In these mountains, sheltered from the heat of the plain, this hike allows you to discover a mountain people forgotten in sublime landscapes. You can climb M’Goun and descend Tassaout, a huge canyon that this river has dug at the foot of the M’Goun chain.

5 to 7 hours of walking per day / vertical drop of 1000 m maximum

Highlights

  • Summit Mgoun at 4068 m with panoramic views across the Central High Atlas
  • Trek through pristine Berber valleys (Ait Bougmez, Ait Bowli, Imerhane) rarely visited by tourists
  • Descend via Tassaout Canyon, a towering gorge carved by its namesake river
  • Experience authentic mountain villages and traditional Berber culture
  • Navigate high-altitude mountain passes on established trails
  • 5–7 hours of daily hiking with maximum 1000 m vertical descent per day

Insider tips

  • These valleys are snowbound much of the year—timing your trek for late spring or early autumn maximises accessibility and weather stability
  • Bring adequate water and electrolytes; remote sections offer limited resupply and mountain dehydration happens fast
  • Hire a local guide familiar with canyon routes; trail markings fade and weather shifts rapidly above 3500 m

Good to know

  • Daily hiking: 5–7 hours with max 1000 m elevation loss; moderate to strenuous fitness required
  • Accommodation in mountain guesthouses and basic refuges; limited amenities above 3000 m
  • Bring layered clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, and a headlamp; weather changes rapidly
  • No vehicular access to trailheads; final approach on foot from nearest road
  • Best arranged via organised tour; solo hiking not recommended due to trail complexity and isolation
