1 / 6Maastricht Self-Guided Detective Murder Mystery Game
About this activity
Solve a Sherlock Holmes–themed murder mystery while exploring Maastricht's streets in this self-guided, app-based detective game. Combining real-world walking with puzzle-solving and story immersion, it transforms the city into your crime scene and works solo or in small teams.
In Maastricht the case begins at the City Hall, and the trail runs from there towards the Vrijthof and the Basilica of Saint Servatius. Further on it drops down to the old walls at the Helpoort, close to the river. This is a self-guided walking tour with a murder to solve along the way.
The centre of Maastricht is compact, though the stretch between the Vrijthof and the riverside has a gentle slope in it, and the game suits families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, with solo play equally possible. A team is up to four people sharing one phone, and larger groups form extra teams. You are not following a guide and there is no set hour to begin.
How to play
Getting going in Maastricht takes four steps.
- Book the City Game
- Check the instructions email
- Download the Loquiz app
- Start playing whenever you like
The case is the murder of Balthasar. Codes need cracking, photographs need taking, and digital characters give statements that do not match each other. Between the Bonnefanten museum and the streets running back from the Helpoort, every puzzle solved cuts the list of suspects down.
With more than one team walking, the scores make a competition of it, which turns it into a practical teambuilding activity. Break off for a while, take the trail up again, and finish the case in Maastricht when you decide to.
