About this activity

Explore two millennia of Chinese art and spirituality on this full-day excursion from Xi'an, whisking you via high-speed rail to Luoyang's UNESCO-listed Longmen Grottoes and its exceptional Ancient Art Museum. This pairing lets you witness one of China's greatest Buddhist sculpture complexes alongside rare tomb artifacts and imperial burial treasures.

At 7:30am, your guide will meet you at the hotel lobby of the centrally located Xi'an hotel, then transfer you to Xian railway station to catch 1.5-hour bullet train to Luoyang. Upon arrival, you will visit the UNESCO cultural heritage, Longmen Grottoes, which was built 1500 years ago and still well-preserved with 2345 caves and niches, 2800 inscriptions, 43 pagodas and over 100,000 Buddhist images.
You will move to  Luoyang Ancient Art Museum after lunch at a local restaurant, which used to be Ancient Tombs Museum. The museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday. There are three exhibition halls including Typical Ancient Tombs, Northern Wei Imperial Mausoleum, and Tomb Paintings. It is a unique museum to learn Chinese history.
Later, you will be transferred to Luoyang station to catch the bullet train back to Xi'an. Upon arrival, you will be transferred back to your Xi'an hotel where the tour concludes.

  • 2,800 inscriptions and 43 pagodas spanning centuries of devotional art

Insider tips

  • Arrive early at Longmen before crowds; the grottos sprawl across both riverbanks—prioritize the main western cliff if time is tight
  • The Ancient Art Museum is closed Mondays; confirm your tour date avoids this blackout
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection; the grottoes site involves significant hillside paths with limited shade
  • Request your guide explain the Northern Wei period context at the museum—it transforms abstract tomb paintings into political history

Good to know

  • 13-hour total itinerary includes travel time; expect 4–5 hours of actual site exploration and 2 hours for lunch
  • Hotel pickup begins at 7:30am from central Xi'an accommodations; confirm your hotel's participation in advance
  • Accessible paths exist at Longmen, though some upper grottos require climbing; notify organizer if mobility is a concern
  • The museum operates Tuesday–Sunday only; tour must be scheduled accordingly
  • All rail transfers and entrance fees appear bundled; check if lunch restaurant has dietary accommodation options
