About this activity

Experience thrilling white-water rafting on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, a rainforest town west of Colombo steeped in cinematic history. This full-day adventure combines adrenaline-pumping rapids with lush tropical scenery and a glimpse into the legacy of the classic film The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka.

It is in the wet zone rainforest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country.

Nevertheless, it comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month.

The Academy Award-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene.

Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometers upstream.

Highlights

  • White-water rafting on Grade II–III rapids in pristine rainforest
  • Explore Kitulgala's film history and visit remnants of the iconic 1957 movie set
  • Navigate the scenic Kelani River with experienced local guides
  • Swim and cool off in natural river pools between rapids
  • Full-day immersion in Sri Lanka's wet zone rainforest ecosystem
  • Round-trip transportation from Colombo included

Insider tips

  • Visit in February or early spring (January–March) for the driest conditions and best water levels; monsoon months bring higher flows and rougher rapids
  • Ask your guide to point out the concrete bridge foundations from the 1957 film shoot—a rarely noticed piece of cinema history
  • Bring a waterproof bag for phones and valuables; river crossings and splashes are inevitable
  • The 12-hour duration includes a 2–3 hour drive each way; pack snacks and stay hydrated

Good to know

  • What to bring: swimwear, quick-dry clothes, water shoes, sunscreen, and a change of clothes for the drive back
  • All safety equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle) provided by the operator
  • Minimum fitness level required to handle Grade II–III rapids; not suitable for non-swimmers or those with mobility issues
  • Lunch and refreshments typically included; confirm dietary requirements when booking
