About this activity

Visit the birthplace of Ceylon tea at Loolkandura Estate, where Scottish pioneer James Taylor planted the island's first-ever tea gardens in 1852 and transformed Sri Lanka's agricultural legacy. This immersive heritage tour combines living history, scenic hill-country landscapes, and authentic tea processing demonstrations just outside Kandy.

James Taylor, the pioneer of the tea industry in Ceylon was born to Michael & Margaret Taylor at Moss park, Monboddo Estate, Laurencekirk in Kincardineshire, Scotland in 1835 (two years before Queen Victoria ascended the throne).

Setting out from London on October 22, 1851, as a youth of 17 he arrived in Ceylon in 1852 and on arrival was sent to Loolcondera estate in Hewaheta a few miles distance from Kandy.

Loolkandura Estate in the Kandy district is the very first patch of tea that was planted as a test after the failure of a coffee plantation in Sri Lanka.

With the wild success of this plantation, then 21-year-old planter James Taylor who was in charge of this plantation has been forever immortalized and has become a part of the post-colonization history of Sri Lanka.

Highlights

  • Walk the original tea fields where James Taylor's 1852 experiment launched an industry
  • Witness traditional tea plucking and processing techniques used for over 170 years
  • Learn the colonial-era story of how tea rescued Ceylon's economy after coffee crop failure
  • Sample freshly brewed Ceylon tea in the estate's heritage setting
  • Explore manicured terraced gardens with panoramic central highlands vistas
  • Meet multigenerational estate workers and hear their perspectives on tea culture

Insider tips

  • Arrive early morning (before 9am) to see active tea plucking; afternoon light is better for photography but worker activity decreases
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip—estate paths are steep and muddy after rain; the terrain is genuinely hilly despite the short duration
  • Ask your guide specifically about the Taylor family history and the failed coffee plantations; estate staff love sharing detailed anecdotes beyond the basic tour script

Good to know

  • 6.5-hour duration includes return travel from Kandy; actual estate time is approximately 3–4 hours
  • Bring a light rain jacket and sun protection; weather in the Kandy highlands changes rapidly
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off typically included; confirm exact meeting time and location with supplier 24 hours prior
  • Moderate walking fitness required; multiple steep climbs through tea rows and uneven paths
  • Tours operate year-round, but paths may be slippery during monsoon season (May–August, November–January)
