About this activity

Explore one of the world's few operational diamond mines that welcomes tourists, located in the historic town of Cullinan near Johannesburg. Choose between a surface tour showcasing mining operations and landscape, or a deeper underground experience descending into the actual working mine where the legendary Cullinan Diamond was discovered in 1905.

Visit the famous Cullinan Diamond Mine situated next to the beautiful town called Cullinan. Two Options are available: A 1.5 to 2 Hour Surface Tour of the Mine where you will experience the surface conditions and viewing the surrounds or a 4 Hour Underground Mine Tour where you will get the chance to be taken underground into the mine. One of the only working mines in the world that allows tourists to tour on the mine. This is also the mine where the Cullinan Diamond was excavated in 1905.

Highlights

  • Underground access to an active diamond mine (rare tourist privilege)
  • Historic site of the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond discovery
  • Choice of surface or underground tour experiences
  • Guided exploration of mining operations and geology
  • Round-trip transport from Johannesburg or Pretoria included

Insider tips

  • Book the underground tour if you're comfortable with confined spaces—it offers the most authentic mining experience and unique perspective tourists rarely get
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip; mine conditions can be uneven and potentially slippery
  • Arrive early; tours operate on schedule and transport times from the city are significant

Good to know

  • Duration includes round-trip transport (7 hours total); actual mine tour is 1.5–2 hours (surface) or 4 hours (underground)
  • Bring a light jacket; underground sections maintain cool temperatures year-round
  • Mobility: underground tour involves stairs and uneven terrain; surface tour is more accessible
  • Not suitable for very young children or those with claustrophobia
