About this activity

Immerse yourself in Old Delhi's 17th-century bazaar culture on this 4-hour evening walking tour, navigating the sensory chaos of Chandni Chowk—Asia's most frenetic market—before sharing a meal at an authentic local restaurant. This experience balances history, spirituality, and street food, revealing how Delhi's core neighbourhood has thrived since Emperor Shah Jahan's reign.

This unique tour takes you to a different part of the world, on a visit to a bazaar and the local culture of Delhi.

Discover Chandni Chowk (Moonlight Square), without doubt the busiest market area in Delhi. It dates back to 1638, when Emperor Shahjahan shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi and his daughter Jahanara constructed a square, around which a busy market grew.

Today, Chandni Chowk is home to silversmiths, repair shops, clothiers, spicy street food vendors and traditional sweetmeat shops.

During this walk, explore not just the bazaar, but also the cultural landscape of this area.

Visit Dariba Kalan (the silver market), Kinari Bazaar (wedding market) and Paranthewali Galli (Lane of Parathas). Also visit Gurdwara Sees Ganj Sahib, built at the site where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam.

Go past Jama Masjid (one of the biggest mosques in Asia) before having dinner at local restaurant.

Highlights

  • Walk through Chandni Chowk, Delhi's legendary market established in 1638
  • Explore Dariba Kalan silver market and Kinari Bazaar (wedding textiles & jewellery district)

  • Visit Gurdwara Sees Ganj Sahib, a significant Sikh pilgrimage site with historical resonance

Insider tips

  • Go in the evening when bazaar crowds peak and street lighting transforms the lanes—the atmosphere is most vibrant between 6–8 PM
  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes; the lanes are narrow, crowded, and uneven
  • Carry small change and hand sanitiser; you'll navigate tight alleys with vendors and informal food stalls
  • Ask your guide to point out silversmiths and sweet makers at work—watching craftspeople is often more memorable than products themselves

Good to know

  • Duration is 4 hours total; the tour runs in the evening, best suited to those comfortable in high-density crowds
  • Dinner is included; inform the operator of dietary restrictions in advance
  • The tour is walking-only; wear modest, respectful clothing when visiting the Gurdwara and passing the mosque
  • Streets are narrow and crowded; mobility issues or large groups may find navigation challenging
  • No significant climbing or stairs, but uneven ground is common throughout
