About this activity

Combine the timeless magic of reindeer herding with the chance to witness the Northern Lights on a 3-hour nocturnal safari from Rovaniemi. Travel by traditional sleigh across frozen Lapland while a fifth-generation family of herders shares their 200-year legacy of Arctic life.

This tour starts from Rovaniemi city centre and will then drive you to one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Southern Lapland. These family herders are based just outside of Rovaniemi on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. They have been herding for 200 years and living in this area for 500 years. From our perspective, they provide the best experience possible when it comes to both knowledge and service.

At the farm, you will be introduced to your reindeer and can then take a seat in the sleigh. Your reindeer will then take you for a peaceful sleigh trip where Arctic nature shows all its silent beauty. Just a bit of luck is needed, and you will soon be able to spot and enjoy the precious Northern Lights dancing over your head.

After the trip, hot drinks and snacks are waiting for you in a wooden cottage on the farm. By the fire, the herders will tell you more about the Lappish way of life and reindeer husbandry. Reindeer herding is a very traditional activity in Lapland, and they will be happy to share with you about their lifestyle and passion.

Highlights

  • Sleigh ride pulled by reindeer across silent, snow-covered landscapes
  • Hunt for the Northern Lights under dark Arctic skies
  • Meet herders from a multi-generational farming family with deep Sámi roots
  • Warm up by a cottage fireside with hot drinks and traditional snacks
  • Learn authentic Lappish culture and reindeer husbandry practices directly from practitioners

Insider tips

  • Clear, cloudless nights between September and March offer the best aurora visibility—dress in extreme layers (merino wool base, insulated parka, thermal boots) as you'll be stationary in the sleigh for extended periods
  • Arrive early to acclimate at the farm and get comfortable with your reindeer before nightfall; the herders can advise on photography settings for capturing the lights
  • Ask the herders about seasonal reindeer behavior—winter animals are calmer and more accustomed to tourists than summer herds

Good to know

  • Hotel pickup is typically included from central Rovaniemi; confirm pickup location and time when booking
  • Wear insulated, waterproof winter gear and bring a camera or smartphone with manual settings if you plan to photograph the aurora
  • The farm is accessible by regular van; those with mobility issues should contact the operator beforehand to discuss the sleigh boarding process
  • Aurora sightings are never guaranteed—the tour prioritizes the reindeer experience and cultural immersion regardless of light activity
