About this activity

Explore one of Nahuel Huapi National Park's hidden gems on a combined boat and hiking expedition to Brazo Tristeza (Sorrow Arm). Navigate pristine waters by motorboat, trek through native forest, and discover the dramatic Frey Stream Cascade, with views of Cerro Tronador's glaciers on clear days.

Among the innumerable options that the Nahuel Huapi National Park offers, there is a little-known route but no less spectacular for that.
From Bahía López, 25 km from Bariloche, you can get to the Brazo Tristeza by motor boat. There, if the day is clear, you can see the glaciers at the top of Cerro Tronador, the highest in the park. When we reach the end of this Arm, we descend to land to walk a path through a dense forest, in which species known as the coihue and the cane alternate. Then we arrive at the Frey Stream Cascade. The flow of this stream varies according to the time of year, producing a peculiar and characteristic sound, which is generated when the water runs between wells, on a bed of rock polished by years of erosion.

Highlights

  • Motorboat journey across Brazo Tristeza's turquoise waters
  • Forest hike through coihue and cane woodland
  • Frey Stream Cascade with seasonal water flow variations
  • Glacier views of Cerro Tronador (park's highest peak) weather permitting
  • Rarely visited route away from tourist crowds

Insider tips

  • Go in spring or early summer for maximum waterfall volume and clearer mountain views
  • Start early to maximize daylight for photography and forest exploration
  • The cascade's sound changes seasonally—visit at different times for contrasting experiences

Good to know

  • Tour departs from Bahía López, approximately 25 km from Bariloche's town centre
  • Wear waterproof jackets and sturdy hiking boots; forest trails can be muddy
  • Total duration is 6 hours; bring water and snacks as facilities are limited in remote areas
  • Glacier visibility depends on weather conditions—morning departures offer better sight lines
