About this activity

Explore one of Nahuel Huapi National Park's hidden gems on this 6-hour guided expedition combining motorboat navigation through Brazo Tristeza with a forest walk to a dramatic cascade. On clear days, you'll glimpse Cerro Tronador's glaciers from across the water while immersing yourself in pristine Patagonian wilderness.

Among the innumerable options that the Nahuel Huapi National Park offers, there is a little-known route but no less spectacular for that.
From Bahía López, 25 km from Bariloche, you can get to the Brazo Tristeza by motor boat. There, if the day is clear, you can see the glaciers at the top of Cerro Tronador, the highest in the park. When we reach the end of this Arm, we descend to land to walk a path through a dense forest, in which species known as the coihue and the cane alternate. Then we arrive at the Frey Stream Cascade. The flow of this stream varies according to the time of year, producing a peculiar and characteristic sound, which is generated when the water runs between wells, on a bed of rock polished by years of erosion.

Highlights

  • Motorboat journey through remote Brazo Tristeza arm of the lake
  • Views of Cerro Tronador's glacier-capped peaks (weather permitting)
  • Forest trek through native coihue and cane vegetation
  • Frey Stream Cascade with distinctive water-carved rock formations
  • Small-group adventure away from Bariloche's main tourist routes

Insider tips

  • Book for clear, dry days in summer (December–February) to maximize glacier visibility across the water
  • Wear layers—weather changes rapidly in the mountains; wind can be strong on the boat
  • Arrive early; the quiet, off-season atmosphere (shoulder months) offers better wildlife observation chances
  • The cascade's sound and intensity vary seasonally; spring/early summer (when snowmelt peaks) creates the most dramatic display

Good to know

  • Motorboat journey starts from Bahía López, 25 km from Bariloche town centre—pickup/transfer details confirm with supplier
  • Forest walk is moderate difficulty on natural trail; sturdy hiking boots recommended
  • Bring waterproof jacket, sun protection, and water bottle
  • 6-hour total duration includes travel, boat time, and forest walk

Best time to visit

December to February offers the clearest days for glacier viewing and most accessible hiking conditions. Early morning departures maximize light and visibility; avoid rainy winter months (June–August) when trails are muddy and cloud cover obscures peaks.
