About this activity

This full-day mountain expedition ventures deep into the Lake District to explore Cerro Tronador's dramatic peaks and the striking Ventisquero Negro glacier, named for its distinctive dark surface caused by volcanic rock and ash. You'll traverse pristine native forests, alpine meadows, and riverside valleys while gaining 1,200+ metres in altitude, ending at one of Argentina's most visually striking glaciers.

Along the way you will find viewpoints to enjoy the impressive views that the hills offer, you can go to one of the dark sandy beaches of Lake Mascardi. Passing Villa Mascardi, turn right and you can follow a path surrounded by native forests. It is an area of exceptional beauty, visited every year by lovers of mountains and fishing.
Upon reaching the Manso River, you can stop at the Los Rapidos Bridge to watch trout swimming in a rush in the crystal clear water.
From there you can see the upper Manso river valley in almost all its extension, with its meandering course and greenish-colored waters. Continuing to Pampa Linda, you will find a beautiful place where you will find accommodation and gastronomy services. From there you can see other Tronador glaciers.
The ascent continues until you reach the last viewpoint of the route, the Ventisquero Negro, a glacier that descends from the Tronador and stands out for its dark color.

  • The final glacier viewpoint is often windy—layer clothing and bring a windproof jacket even in summer

Good to know

  • 9-hour duration includes all driving and stops; pace is moderate with multiple photo opportunities
  • Sturdy hiking boots essential for forest paths and gravel approaches to viewpoints
  • Route gains significant elevation; basic fitness required but no rock climbing or technical skills needed
  • Bring water, snacks, and sun protection; limited services until Pampa Linda midway point
  • May–September offers best weather and glacier visibility; winter (June–August) may have road closures
