Perito Moreno Glacier advances and retreats unpredictably, sometimes surging several meters per day, making it one of the few glaciers in the world that still grows despite global warming.
The glacier was named after Francisco Perito Moreno, an Argentine explorer and geographer who surveyed Patagonia in the late 19th century and helped establish Argentina's borders.
At roughly 30 km long, 5 km wide, and 60 meters tall above water level, Perito Moreno is the second-largest contiguous ice field outside the polar regions.
Icebergs calving from the glacier can reach the size of city blocks and create thunderous explosions audible from the viewing platforms up to 5 km away.
The glacier's brilliant blue colour comes from densely compressed ice that absorbs red light wavelengths and reflects blue, a phenomenon also seen in deep ocean water.
Access to Perito Moreno is via El Calafate, a town that transformed from a small sheep-farming settlement into Argentina's main gateway to glacial tourism in the last 30 years.
