Saint Martin is the smallest territory in the world to be shared by two sovereign nations—the French side (Collectivity of Saint Martin) and the Dutch side (Sint Maarten).

The island sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt and was devastated by Hurricane Irma in September 2017, which caused widespread damage but has since undergone significant reconstruction.

Loterie Farm, a historic plantation estate on the French side, is one of the oldest inhabited settlements on the island and now operates as a nature reserve and cultural venue.

Anguilla, a separate British Overseas Territory, lies just 6 km (4 miles) north and is easily accessible by ferry from Saint Martin in under 25 minutes.
