Things to Do in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is home to Mexico's only true coral reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which stretches 900 kilometers and lies just 600 meters offshore.

The town was named after a local hero, José María Morelos, a priest and military leader during Mexico's independence war in the early 1800s.

Puerto Morelos remained a quiet fishing village until the 1990s and is deliberately car-free in its central plaza to preserve its laid-back Caribbean charm.

The underwater sculpture park, Museo Subacuático, features over 400 works by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, creating an artificial reef while serving as a gallery.

Fresh seafood is central to Puerto Morelos' identity—the town hosts a yearly Caribbean Festival celebrating local fish, shrimp, and octopus preparations.
