Cozumel is the world's second-largest coral reef system, making it a top destination for diving and snorkeling after Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

The island was a major Mayan trading post and pilgrimage site dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, before Spanish conquest in the 16th century.

Cozumel sits directly in the path of the Caribbean's warm Gulf Stream current, which creates ideal diving conditions and keeps water temperatures between 75–82°F year-round.

The island's name comes from the Mayan word 'Cuzam-Lil,' meaning 'place of the swallows,' referring to the coatimundis (local wildlife) rather than actual birds.

Cozumel is one of the few places in Mexico where you drive on the right side of the road but traffic rules differ slightly—it's more relaxed and scooters dominate local transport.
