The Sagrada Família basilica has been under continuous construction since 1883 and is still not complete, making it one of the world's longest-running building projects.
Antoni Gaudí took over the design in 1883 and devoted the last years of his life entirely to the project, living on-site in a small house from 1906 until his death in 1926.
The basilica's construction was halted during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and again during the COVID-19 pandemic, but work resumed with a completion target around 2026–2032.
The interior features an organic, forest-like structure with columns that branch like trees, designed to support the vaults and create a natural, cathedral-like atmosphere without traditional flying buttresses.
UNESCO designated the Sagrada Família a World Heritage Site in 1984, recognizing it as an outstanding representation of Catalan Modernism and one of Spain's most visited monuments.
Gaudí's personal crypt is located beneath the basilica, and visitors can view it from a glass floor; he was buried there after his death in 1926.
