San Marino is the world's oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic, founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus on Mount Titano.

The country is completely surrounded by Italy and is one of only two independent nations entirely enclosed within another country (the other being Vatican City).

San Marino has three castles perched on the peaks of Mount Titano—Guaita, Cesta, and Montale—which appear on its flag and coat of arms.

The nation has no airport; visitors must fly into nearby Bologna, Rimini, or other Italian cities and drive or take a bus across the border.

San Marino has never been at war in its 1,700-year history and was the only European country to officially grant asylum to Ronald Reagan during the Cold War.
