Things to Do in Porto

Porto's iconic Dom Luís Bridge, completed in 1886, has a double-deck iron arch design that was revolutionary for its time and remains one of Europe's most recognisable bridges.

The city is built on steep granite hills on the north bank of the Douro River, making it one of Europe's most vertically challenging cities with nearly 1,000 steps connecting different levels.

Port wine, the fortified wine that made Porto famous worldwide, is aged in cellars (called lodges) across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, not in Porto proper.

Porto's historic Ribeira district is a UNESCO World Heritage site with narrow medieval alleyways, azulejo-tiled buildings, and colourful laundry strung between centuries-old houses.

The city was briefly the capital of Portugal in the 14th century and played a key role in Portuguese maritime exploration during the Age of Discovery.
