Murano has been the centre of Venetian glassmaking since the 13th century, when the Republic of Venice relocated furnaces here to protect the city from fire.
The island's glassmakers developed a technique called *cristallo* in the 15th century, creating nearly colourless glass that was prized across Europe and made Murano famous.
Murano is connected to Venice by a 10-minute vaporetto (water bus) ride and is technically part of the Venice municipality, not a separate town.
