Burano's brightly coloured houses are traditionally painted in specific colour sequences based on official government records, with residents required to repaint their facades in their assigned hue.

The island was a major lace-making centre from the 16th century onwards, and Burano lace became so renowned that it rivalled Venetian glass in prestige across European courts.
