The Roman Forum was the commercial, political, and religious heart of ancient Rome for over 900 years, from around the 7th century BC until the 5th century AD.
The Forum's ground level today sits approximately 5 metres (16 feet) above the original ancient street level, buried under centuries of sediment and debris.
The Temple of Saturn in the Forum housed Rome's state treasury and is one of the oldest surviving structures, with foundations dating back to 497 BC.
The Vestal Virgins, priestesses who maintained the sacred flame of Vesta, lived in the House of the Vestal Virgins on the Forum and were the only women permitted to own property independently in ancient Rome.
Julius Caesar was cremated in the Forum at the Temple of Venus Genetrix, and the exact spot is marked by a small shrine that modern visitors can still see.
