Things to Do in Positano, Amalfi Coast

Positano has no beach of its own—the town cascades directly onto pebble and rocky shores, making it one of Italy's most dramatically vertical coastal villages.

The pastel-coloured houses clinging to the cliffs were originally painted in bright hues to help fishermen identify their homes from the sea.

Positano was virtually unknown outside Italy until the 1950s, when it became a haven for artists and writers fleeing post-war Europe.

The town sits on the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast, a 50 km stretch of some of Europe's most scenic coastline carved into limestone cliffs.

In summer, Positano's population swells from around 3,600 year-round residents to over 15,000 daily visitors, making June and September far more manageable.

The town has no train station and limited road access—most visitors arrive by bus, private transfer, or boat from nearby Amalfi or Salerno.
