Things to Do in Amalfi

Amalfi was one of Italy's four great medieval maritime republics, rivaling Venice and Genoa in power and trade from the 9th to 11th centuries.

The town sits at sea level in a dramatic ravine, making it one of the few settlements on the Amalfi Coast built directly into a cliff face rather than perched above it.

Amalfi lemons (Sfusato Amalfitano) are protected by EU geographical indication status and have thicker skin and lower acidity than regular lemons, making them ideal for limoncello.

The Cathedral of Amalfi, dating to the 9th century, houses the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle, brought back by Amalfi merchants from Constantinople in 1206.

Amalfi gives its name to the entire 50 km Amalfi Coast region, though the town itself has just 1,300 residents and remains surprisingly walkable despite its tourist fame.

The Amalfi Coast's dramatic terrain made it nearly impossible to reach by road until a winding coastal highway was completed in 1962, transforming it from isolated fishing villages to a major destination.
