The wreckage is a Douglas DC-3 that crashed in 1973 during bad weather, and its fuselage remains on the black sand beach as a haunting monument to aviation history.
The plane's location on Sólheimasandur beach in South Iceland has become so popular that the Icelandic government installed a walking path and removed the original wreckage marker to discourage off-road driving damage.
The aircraft is approximately 3.5 km from the nearest parking area, making it a 7 km round-trip trek that attracts over 100,000 visitors annually to this remote coastal site.
The wreck sits on one of Iceland's most dynamic black sand beaches, which is actively shaped by wind, waves, and glacial sediment from nearby Vatnajökull glacier.
All 25 crew and passengers survived the crash, and the plane was deemed too damaged to salvage, so it was left to become an unintended landmark and one of Iceland's most photographed wrecks.
