Snæfellsjökull, the 1,446-metre glacier-capped volcano at Snæfellsnes' tip, inspired Jules Verne's 1864 novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' as the fictional entry point to an underground world.
The peninsula's dramatic basalt cliffs and black-sand beaches were formed by successive lava flows over the past 700,000 years, making it one of Iceland's most geologically diverse regions.
Snæfellsnes was home to Iceland's first chess grandmaster, and the region has deep roots in Viking settlement history dating back to the 9th century.
The 54-kilometre Snæfellsnes Peninsula is sometimes called 'Iceland in miniature' because it contains glaciers, waterfalls, lava formations, beaches, and mountains all within a short drive.
Kirkjufell, the iconic cone-shaped mountain on Snæfellsnes, has become one of Iceland's most photographed landmarks, featuring in the HBO series 'Game of Thrones' as the 'Arrowhead Mountain'.
