Things to Do in Delphi

Delphi was considered the centre of the world in ancient Greece, marked by the sacred stone called the Omphalos (navel of the world) that still stands in the archaeological site today.

The Oracle of Delphi, one of history's most famous prophetic institutions, operated for over 1,000 years and was consulted by kings, generals, and ordinary citizens before major decisions.

Delphi sits at 570 metres elevation on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, offering dramatic views over the Corinthian Gulf and olive groves that stretch to the sea.

The site was buried under metres of rock and earth for centuries after an earthquake in the 4th century AD, preserving many structures until systematic excavation began in the 1890s.

Delphi's archaeological museum houses the famous Charioteer bronze statue, one of the finest surviving Greek bronzes from the 5th century BCE.

The Theatre of Delphi, built into the mountainside, could hold 5,000 spectators and hosted dramatic competitions and musical festivals during ancient religious celebrations.
