Epidaurus was an ancient healing sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, where patients came from across Greece seeking cures through a combination of ritual, herbs, and early surgical techniques.
The site hosted the Epidauria festival every four years, featuring athletic competitions and theatrical performances that rivalled the Olympic Games in prestige.
The theatre's design uses a mathematical ratio in its stone seats (koilon) that contributes to its legendary acoustics—a principle still studied by modern acoustical engineers.
The Sanctuary of Epidaurus sits on the Peloponnese peninsula about 30 kilometres east of Nafplio, making it one of Greece's most intact Classical Greek complexes.
